Week 1 - Getting Connected
Signed syllabus, About me, Digital Nation Video Multitasking and Addiction notes, Essay- introduction,Other important skills taught- connecting to printer, netclassroom, bookmarks, typing skills
***Essay Topic: Does the digital world we live in have positive or negative effects on your future?
Week 2 - How to write an Essay Structure of the essay - opening sentence, transition, thesis statement, reasons, connecting reasons to paragraphs, conclusion, Works Cited MLA format. Other important skills - typing skills, Naviance - scattagrams, started researching for project next week "My Plan for the Future"
Week 3 - Start of Mini Exhibition #1 - Prezi "My Plan for My Future" How to create a Prezi, researching colleges using scattagrams in naviance, researching careers in naviance, Student identifying their hobbies, smart goal, health and wellness, three colleges including GPA and SAT scores needed, two careers, sports/ clubs they are participating in or plan to participate, Family, and motivation. Presentation will be video taped and copy given to student immediately after presentation. Student will then write a written reflection about...... What did they do well? what did they like? and what would they have done differently?
Week 4 - Mini Exhibition Prezi Presentations - "My Plan for My Future" Requirements consist of 7 different topics (College, Family, Career, Goal, Motivation, Hobbies, and Health and Wellness) Students researched information using Naviance (scattagrams and career clusters) using this information they had to create a well balanced "Plan for their Future" using the Prezi presentation online tool. The presentation needed to be three minutes long. It was video taped and a copy of the video was given to the student. Student watched the video and reflected on the positive parts and areas of improvement in their presentation. Students were guided through the Maryknoll Libraries focusing on EBSCO, but finding all the " Cool Stuff" that can help them learn. Students were shown how to curate the web using Google Advanced search and Scoop.it. Week 5 - Start of Mini Exhibition - Digital Citizenship PSA This is a group project, random drawing. Students work together to create a video that will increase the audience awareness of the following topics. Pause before you post, sexting, cyber-bullying, online harassment, fake profiling, cyber-stalking. I-Safe America and creative commons are resources used to help students understand the dangers. Students used the Maryknoll online library EBSCO to do their research.
Week 6 – Completion of Digital Citizenship PSA. Students completed the following skills to create their video. Research skills, MLA citation, script writing, storyboard, filming, pictures, music, catch phrase, voice over, and video editing using imovie and movie maker. Students will take what they learned and present it to the 8th graders. The freshmen will show their video and answer questions about their topic. (individual and group evaluations) Week 7 & 8 - Final Digital Citizenship Video Exhibitions presented to the class. (peer assessment, individual group evaluations, and teacher evaluation) Digital Citizenship videos posted to mrsheidimcgivern.weebly.com (my webpage) parents can view videos. Started final exhibition #3 individual Final EQ Essay. Essay topic: What is one challenge you face toward being a successful Maryknoll student, and how do you plan to overcome it? Students used google advanced search, Google Scholar, Maryknoll Library, Scoopt.it, and mind/shift. to find research related to their topic.
Week 9 – Mini Exhibition #3 individual essays. Topic: What is one challenge you face toward being a successful Maryknoll student, and how do you plan to overcome it? The guidance and counseling advisor did a presentation and discussion on the following topics: Safe environments, graduation requirements and GPA calculations. Course closing with a video and discussion about how to survive high school.
